     For the sake of truth I must admit that I had always considered the demand Pakistan by the Muslim League as a bargaining counter. Although I honestly felt that in the context of India as a whole Muslims had legitimate cause for grievance against upper class Hindu chauvinism, I held the view very strongly indeed that the creation of Pakistan would never solve the communal problem. On the contrary, it would aggravate communal hatred and bitterness. Besides, I maintained that it would not ameliorate the condition of Muslims in Pakistan. The inevitable result of the partition of the country would be to prolong, if not perpetuate, the poverty, illiteracy and miserable condition of the toiling masses of both the States.

সত্যের খাতিরে আমাকে স্বীকার করতেই হবে যে, মুসলিম লীগের পাকিস্তান দাবিকে আমি সবসময়ই দর কষাকষির একটি কৌশল হিসেবে বিবেচনা করতাম। যদিও আমি আন্তরিকভাবে অনুভব করতাম যে, সমগ্র ভারতের প্রেক্ষাপটে উচ্চবিত্ত হিন্দুদের উগ্র জাতীয়তাবাদের বিরুদ্ধে মুসলমানদের অভিযোগের যথেষ্ট কারণ ছিল, তবুও আমি দৃঢ়ভাবে এই মত পোষণ করতাম যে, পাকিস্তান সৃষ্টি কখনোই সাম্প্রদায়িক সমস্যার সমাধান করবে না। বরং, এটি সাম্প্রদায়িক ঘৃণা ও তিক্ততাকে আরও বাড়িয়ে তুলবে। এছাড়াও, আমি মনে করতাম যে এটি পাকিস্তানে মুসলমানদের অবস্থার কোনো উন্নতি ঘটাবে না। দেশভাগের অনিবার্য ফল হবে উভয় রাষ্ট্রের শ্রমজীবী ​​জনসাধারণের দারিদ্র্য, নিরক্ষরতা এবং দুর্দশাকে দীর্ঘায়িত করা, এমনকি স্থায়ী করে তোলা।
